November 17-21, 2014 marks the 15th annual International Education Week (IEW), a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of State that celebrates the importance and benefits of international education in the United States and around the world. Over 100 countries now celebrate this week.
During IEW, the American Consulate General in Jerusalem, in cooperation with its EducationUSA education advisors in the West Bank and Gaza, will offer a variety of outreach activities that underscore the importance of education to build job skills among Palestinian youth and prepare them to be good leaders and global citizens.
At the IEW opening session on Nov. 17th, American Deputy Principal Officer Dorothy P. Shea will speak about how international education benefits both American and Palestinian society. She will announce the most recent statistics for Palestinians studying in the U.S. and Americans studying in the Palestinian territories and will highlight the support and commitment of the American Consulate General Jerusalem for educational exchange programs.
As a part of its IEW activities, the Consulate General also sponsored a social media competition, asking Palestinians in the Access Microscholarship Program and alumni of exchanges to the U.S., to send videos, photographs, poems or essays about their experiences. The winning entries are currently posted on the Consulate General’s Facebook page.
