JERUSALEM – This week marks the 17th annual International Education Week (IEW), a worldwide initiative by the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of State to celebrate the importance of international education as a means of empowering young people. At an inaugural event on Monday, the U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem and the Palestinian Ministry of Education launched a series of education “Open Days” throughout the West Bank, Jerusalem, and Gaza that provide young Palestinians with the information and tools to achieve their dreams of studying abroad. IEW also highlights the extensive education cooperation between the Palestinian Ministry of Education and the U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem.
The U.S. government is currently investing more than $82 million dollars in Palestinian students. During 2015-2016, more Palestinian students studied in the United States than during any previous year. Moreover, the October U.S.-Palestinian Higher Education Dialogue in Washington, DC was the first of its kind and focused on fostering partnerships between U.S. and Palestinian universities and deepening linkages between the private sector and higher education. The U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem runs the world’s largest English Access program, benefitting 2,350 Palestinian high school students each year. Lastly, the Consulate sponsors approximately 250 Palestinian students, academics, and professionals to travel to the United States annually on exchange programs.
In his remarks, U.S. Consul General Donald Blome said, “The Consulate- and EducationUSA-sponsored “Open Day” sessions in Jerusalem, Ramallah, Tulkarem, Qalqilia, Hebron, Jenin and Gaza this week will give young Palestinians the information and tools they need to study in the best American universities, access international exchange opportunities, and achieve their educational and professional aspirations.”
