U.S. Consul General hosts “Grown in Gaza” and Announces New Gaza Recovery Program

as-19On May 9, U.S. Consul General in Jerusalem Donald A. Blome hosted “Grown in Gaza”, an event bringing together policy-makers, Palestinian farmers, and journalists to highlight the potential of Gaza’s agricultural sector. The event featured Jamal Sobeh, a prominent chef from Gaza, fresh Gaza produce, and food using traditional Gaza recipes.  In remarks to guests in attendance, Mr. Blome calls for a better vision for the future of Gaza, “a future that would address Gaza’s pressing humanitarian needs as well as create sustainable economic growth and employment.”

Consul General Blome also took the opportunity to announce a new $50 million Gaza humanitarian support initiative – Envision Gaza 2020 – provided through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) West Bank and Gaza Mission in partnership with Catholic Relief Services (CRS).  Beyond humanitarian assistance to vulnerable populations, Envision Gaza 2020, will increase employment opportunities through short-term jobs, paid internships, minor capital investments, and job training. (A USAID Fact Sheet offering more details of Envision Gaza is attached.)
