U.S. Consulate General Jerusalem Celebrates American Independence Day

JERUSALEM – Consul General Donald Blome and his wife, Debbie, welcomed nearly 700 guests to their official residence for the Consulate General’s annual American Independence Day celebration.  The Palestinian Authority was represented by His Excellency, Prime Minister Dr. Rami Hamdallah.  U.S. Special Representative for International Negotiations Jason Greenblatt attended the event as part of his visit to the region supporting President Trump’s commitment to work towards peace.

In his remarks, Consul General Blome said “The history of my own country teaches a lesson.  That lesson is about the power of ideas – words – to overcome challenges and create miracles.  The three great religious traditions that animate the stones of this city share many roots, but they are united in understanding, and even venerating, the power of words.  That power drove these three interlinked faiths from humble and improbable origins to a position of centrality in the lives of much of humanity.  Today as we work with Israelis and Palestinians on finding a new path toward peace, we must remember that lesson.  We must banish the appeal of cynicism and allow space for real dialogue.”
